Harkening back, sometimes generations, the sweet confections featured in my Pop Art series “Hard Candies” have always been a tried-and-true confidant in good times and in bad. Shared among friends, enjoyed by ourselves and sometimes given as tokens of love, these candy favorites never seem to fail in providing warm memories of nostalgic delight. The term “comfort food” touches on a healing process and, for this artist, candy has always been the most potent elixir for those times.
Done in oil on gallery wrap canvas, lending themselves to the actual candy bar, this series samples a variety of popular candy letters along with their wrapper backgrounds. Mashing them together creates a disarming way to reconsider a familiar word or phrase. The “Hard Candies” aren’t trying to change the world but just refresh it’s thinking and always provide a big smile.
